The portrait shows the eminent Italian chemist Giacomo Luigi Ciamician in a dark suit, seated on a chair. His signature appears below the picture. Ciamician was one of the founders of photochemistry and one of the first originators of the idea of solar energy. As early as the beginning of the 20th century he predicted that humanity would use the sun's energy as a clean and inexhaustible source.
He was a professor at the University of Bologna and a senator of Italy, headed the Italian Chemical Society and was a member of many European academies. He wrote more than 400 scientific works, received more than 40 patents and was nominated for the Nobel Prize 9 times. The chemistry institute in Bologna bears his name, and his monument also stands there.
