In memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide
In 1915, 1.5 million peaceful Armenians living in their historical homeland became victims of genocide. The Armenian Genocide is an unprecedented and monstrous crime in world history, organised and carried out with extreme cruelty by the Turks.
The day of remembrance of the victims is 24 April. On that very day in 1915, in Constantinople (Istanbul), most of the Armenian intellectuals were taken from their homes and brutally killed. Among the dead were well-known writers, composers, scholars and other prominent people, those most able to unite the Armenians and organise resistance.
As a result of the genocide most of the Armenians living in Western Armenia were killed, and a smaller part was scattered around the world. Part of the population of present-day Armenia are descendants of migrants from Western Armenia. The image shows a burning candle and the year “1915” against the background of an old map.
