Armenian inscription in Caesarea (Kayseri)
An Armenian inscription in Caesarea (Kayseri). A multi-line Armenian text, partly worn away, is carved inside an arched frame cut into the rock.
According to the source, under Emperor Justinian II (535–536) the city belonged to the province of “Third Armenia”, and in the 7th–9th centuries to the Armenian theme (a military-administrative district) of the Byzantine Empire. In 1813 the city had 25,000 inhabitants, of whom 1,500 were Armenians, 300 Greeks and 150 Jews. After the Genocide of 1915, all the Armenians of the city either left or were killed.
