Berdavan (Ghalinjakar) Fortress

Berdavan Fortress, also known as Ghalinjakar, stands in the community of Berdavan in Tavush Province, on the right bank of the Koghb River, only a few hundred metres from the Armenian–Azerbaijani border. The fortress was built in the 10th–11th centuries and restored in the 17th century. It is first mentioned in written sources in 1123. Ghalinjakar was one of the border fortresses built at the end of the 9th century, under the Bagratuni dynasty, to protect the north-eastern frontiers of the Armenian kingdom.

In 1983 the fortress grounds were cleared and landscaped; the upper parts of the walls and towers were taken down and rebuilt, and the 2 north-eastern towers were restored.

The picture shows the round stone towers of the fortress with the Armenian tricolour flag on top, surrounded by green hills, cultivated fields and a village in the distance.
