Armenians in the Great Patriotic War

The photograph shows an elderly man in Soviet military uniform, his chest covered with numerous orders and medals, sitting at a desk. There are spectacles on the desk, a horse statuette on a cabinet behind him, and books on the right.

During the Great Patriotic War, 70,000 Armenians were awarded orders and medals; 99 Armenians and 10 more people of other nationalities from the Armenian SSR received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (Ivan Bagramyan and Nelson Stepanyan twice); 68 Armenian generals commanded military formations on all fronts; and 26 people became full holders of the Order of Glory. Taking an active part in the war were the future Marshal of the Soviet Union I. Bagramyan (1955), Chief Marshal of Armoured Troops A. Babajanyan (1975), Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union I. Isakov (1955), Marshal of Aviation S. Khudyakov (1944) and Marshal of Engineer Troops S. Aganov (1980). More than 66,000 home-front workers were also decorated.
