Armenian women sewing shirts for the army
The photograph shows Armenian women sewing shirts for the Armenian army in 1918. In the front row the women sit at sewing machines placed on wooden crates, and behind them many other women are sitting and standing. A woven reed wall and wooden beams are visible in the background.
Their work behind the front line was as important as the soldiers’ struggle on the front. This image bears witness that national resistance was also built through the patient work and devotion of women.
