Armenian orphans in Marash, 1918
The photograph was taken at the end of 1918 in Marash, in front of the old Armenian church of the Kuyujak quarter, where several Armenian women looked after orphaned children. The women and older children stand on stone steps, while the little ones sit on carpets spread on the ground.
Many Armenian orphans perished in Marash (Germanik) during the Genocide of 1915–1916. Some of them were found after the Armistice of Mudros, signed on 30 October 1918, by which Ottoman Turkey capitulated.
