The first memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide
The photograph shows the first memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, built in 1919 in Constantinople (Istanbul), in the Armenian cemetery of Pangalti near Taksim Square. On the tall stone stele, a veiled standing figure and another figure reaching out a hand towards it are carved in relief, and on the pedestal lies a bronze figure covered with drapery. Trees stand behind.
The memorial was dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. In 1922 it was dismantled and disappeared from the Pangalti cemetery. According to historians, it was last seen in the garden of a military unit where the Istanbul Military Museum was located.
