Soprano Zabel Aram

The photograph shows the soprano Zabel Aram, born Takuhi Ter Mesropian. She was born in Bardizag (Bahçecik), one of the important Armenian cultural centres, located south-west of Constantinople (Istanbul).

The singer is shown in profile, with short dark hair, a large hoop earring and a thin necklace. A barely legible handwritten inscription appears in the lower left corner.

Zabel Aram was formed in the Western Armenian musical milieu and through her art presented Armenian song in the diaspora. Her work is included in the collection “Armenian Diaspora: Memory and Innovation”.
