Women of Odzun Milking Sheep, 1935
The photograph shows women of the village of Odzun milking sheep in the mountains. It was taken by the photographer Gevond Gukasyan in 1935, in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.
In the foreground, women in headscarves kneel as they milk the sheep, while in the centre a boy in a fur hat holds one of the animals. Men and children stand behind them, some of them also in fur hats. Hills rise in the distance.
The scene testifies to the important role of livestock breeding in mountain settlements and to the significance of women's work. Odzun was known for its farming traditions, and women took an active part in providing for the family and the community.
