King Levon I

The image depicts the founding king of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, Levon I. He is shown in royal attire, with a crown on his head, the orb of power in one hand and a sword in the other, symbolising statehood, strength and lawful authority.

The king wears a long robe with a cross on the chest, a belt and a red cloak. On the left is a throne bearing the image of a lion; behind him are arches, the sea and a fortress.

King Levon succeeded in securing international recognition for the Armenian kingdom and in making it an important political centre of the Mediterranean region.
