Armed Armenian boy from Javakhk

The photograph shows an Armenian child from Javakhk standing in a mountainous setting with a rifle in his hand. He wears a head wrap and a dark jacket with light-coloured trim. A cartridge belt crosses his chest, and a weapon is fixed to his belt.

The traditional clothing, belt and shoulder strap were characteristic of the military appearance of the men and boys of that region. He is young, yet his posture is upright and his gaze serious and focused. This scene speaks of times when even children were involved in the self-defence of the community.
