Bjni Fortress

Bjni Fortress is a medieval Armenian fortification in the village of Bjni in the Kotayk Province. It was built in the 9th–10th centuries by the Pahlavuni family, descended from the Bagratuni dynasty, on the top and slopes of a rocky plateau surrounded on three sides by the gorge of the Hrazdan River. At different times in history the fortress was an important stronghold and guarded the approaches to the village. Today ruins of the walls and some buildings survive, along with the remains of a 5th-century church.

The photograph shows a wall of dark stone with round towers, running along a green slope beneath the cliffs.
