Armenian woman from Utik, Nukha district
An Armenian woman from Utik, Nukha district. The photograph was presumably taken between 1900 and 1905. Beneath it is a caption in Russian and French stating that she is an Armenian woman from Utik, Nukha district.
The woman wears traditional dress: a headdress with ornaments hanging at the temples, a cloth covering the lower part of her face, and a large flowered shawl falling from her head over her shoulders. Around her waist is a wide metal belt with a large round buckle. The Armenian national costume is called taraz.
The Nukha district was an administrative unit of the Elizavetpol Governorate of the Russian Empire. Utik is a historical province of Greater Armenia, which included part of the territory of present-day Azerbaijan.
