A woman spinning wool, Zangezur, 1931

An old photograph of an Armenian woman spinning wool on a spinning wheel. It was taken in 1931 in Zangezur and belongs to Stepan Lisitsian’s series “The Armenians of Zangezur”.

The woman wears traditional Armenian dress and a headdress; her mouth and chin are covered with a white cloth, and a wide sash is tied at her waist. She sits by a large wooden spinning wheel, drawing out the thread by hand. In front of her lies a ball of woollen yarn.
