A destroyed Armenian monastery in Nakhijevan
This Armenian monastery in Nakhijevan was built in the 8th century and was about 1,200 years old. It was destroyed in 1995 on the order of Heydar Aliyev. In 2008, on the order of Ilham Aliyev, a new mosque was built on the foundations of the destroyed monastery.
The photograph shows the brick church with a tall many-sided drum and a conical dome topped by a stork’s nest. Beside it is a smaller structure with arched openings, and below are arched entrances. In the foreground are visitors, one of whom is taking a photograph.
