Funeral of Sose Mayrik in Alexandria, 1952

The photograph shows the funeral of Sose Mayrik at the Armenian Church of Saints Paul and Peter in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1952. Her covered coffin has been placed with honours in front of the church for the farewell, and a large crowd has gathered around it.

Sose Mayrik (Sose Vardanyan, 1865–1952) took part in the Armenian national liberation movement; she was the wife and comrade-in-arms of Aghbyur Serob. She fought many times in the battles of the fedayis. In 1898, after the battle of Babshen, she took refuge in Sasun (Sason) with Serob. In 1899, together with her son and Serob's brothers, she fought against a Turkish detachment; her son and the brothers were killed. Sose Mayrik, who showed great courage in that battle, was wounded, captured and sent to Baghesh (Bitlis), but was soon released.
